Sculpture by the Sea is an outdoor art exhibit along the beautiful Bondi Beach to Tamarama coastal walk in Sydney, Australia. It features over 100 sculptures by artists from Australia and across the world transforming the spectacular coast into a temporary sculpture park.
Since its humble beginning in 1997, the event has featured about 1000 sculptors and has now become a major event attracting about 500,000 people every year.
This Sunday was the last day of the event so we decided to cancel our trip to Royal National Park located just south of Sydney. Charles and I agreed to spend the day in the city instead, starting with a visit to the Art Gallery of New South Wales to check out Pablo Picasso’s masterpieces currently in Sydney as part of their world tour.
After almost two hours of perusing on Picasso’s seven decades of artworks, we headed to Bondi Beach despite the intermittent showers.

I like this gigantic pin wedged into a crevice in Bondi’s sandstone. There was a woman dancing in front of it as part of the act.

Along with the humongous tap, this was one of the more popular artworks among the visitors.

I like how they they constructed this miniature house under the sandstone.

This collection represents a tiny section of the whole exhibit. We didn’t’ make it all the way to Tamarana Beach because of the uncooperative weather. It would have been nice to do the coastal walk and take pictures with sunny blue skies. Either way, we were glad we still made our way to Bondi to witness my first Sculpture by the Sea. It was a visual treat which added colour and life to that dreary weekend.
